The healer’s lament

Watercolour and ink on paper, 500x400mm

In 2010 I created a number of paintings called “The Healer’s Lament”. I have been thinking about them recently because the central theme of those paintings continues to stand as a contrast to social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The underlying issue behind “The Healer’s Lament” is people believing that the world is essentially a bad place; that human behaviour is by its very nature, self-centred and violent. The media reinforces this mental attitude by broadcasting a never ending barrage of violent actions and retaliations. No wonder so many people feel that the battle for peace is lost before it has even commenced and that aspiring for a happy and fulfilling life is just a naïve dream. What I am trying to convey in “The Healer’s Lament”, is that much of humanity has created and accepted this negative mindset as the global reality. This series of paintings acts as a platform for me to express that “Positivity” is also a mindset that can construct in individuals and globally a different reality. Through extensive research in science and psychology, we know a lot more about how our brain and mind works and that constructing a positive mindset is a process that we can all learn. While we may feel powerless to change this negativity in the world, a positive mindset attracts positivity in others.
